About our department
Bioengineering applies engineering principles and practices to living things, to solve some of the most challenging problems that face our world today.

We believe that in the years ahead, medicine and engineering will be fully integrated, using advanced technology to improve and extend human life. From improved diagnostic and treatment technologies, to custom design of drugs and genomic therapies, to artificial tissues and organs, breakthroughs resulting from the combination of engineering, biological, and medical sciences can help people lead longer, healthier, and more productive lives.

Established in 1998, the Department of Bioengineering at UC Berkeley draws on the talents of faculty from the physical and life sciences, as well as engineering, to address problems of biomedical science from an engineering perspective. With 30 faculty and affiliated faculty from a range of departments and backgrounds, our department conducts research in many diverse areas.

In addition to cutting-edge research on a variety of topics, we are a leader in training the next generation of bioengineers. The Department of Bioengineering at UC Berkeley grants the Bachelor of Science degree in bioengineering, and jointly grants the Ph.D. degree in bioengineering with the University of California, San Francisco medical school.

The bioengineering department is part of the College of Engineering, a world-renowned program consistently ranked in the top three overall engineering schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report. UC Berkeley as whole has been ranked as the top public university in the world.
