BEIPP - the BioEngineering Industry Partnership Program
Widely regarded as the best public university in the world, the University of California is a major source of research and development in the state, and a prodigious source of innovation and new technology. By 2002, 85% of firms in the growing California biotech industry employed UC alumni with advanced degrees, and 1 in 3 biotech firms has been founded by a UC scientist (1 in 6 nationwide) (UC Discovery Grant) .
As Berkeley's newest engineering department, bioengineering stands poised to extend Berkeley's legacy of innovation and success into this expanding field.
Participation in the BioEngineering Industry Partnership Program enables companies and institutions outside UC Berkeley to realize the benefits of a close relationship to Berkeley Bioengineering. These include familiarity with faculty and their research, timely notification of research results and publications, and access to our most important resource: our talented students.
Our goals are:
- Facilitate transfer of research results to industry
- Help ensure department research retains industry relevance
- Facilitate business access to research publications, students and faculty
- Encourage gifts/grants to support our educational and research activities
Associates may choose between three levels of involvement:
BioEngineering Affiliates (BEA)
BioEngineering Affiliates are entitled to all the following benefits with an annual unrestricted donation of $7,500 or more to the department.
Benefits: Symposia
- Bioengineering Science and Technology Summit An annual conference including faculty research talks, demonstrations, and laboratory tours. BEA members are invited to attend at no charge, any remaining seats may be granted to non-members with conference fee.
- Invitations to all special seminars and colloquia
Publications
- Department annual report
- Semi-annual newsletter
- Forefront, the College of Engineering magazine, featuring current research by students and faculty
- Email press releases of department news
- Abstracts of bioengineering students' summer research projects
- Abstracts of graduate Ph.D. theses
Student Recruitment
- Exclusive on-campus recruiting sessions, hosted by the Bioengineering Department annually upon request.
- Annual graduate and undergraduate student resume book
BioEngineering Partners (BEP)
Requiring an annual unrestricted donation of $25,000 or more, BEP membership is designed for partners who wish closer association with our students and more in-depth and timely information on bioengineering faculty research.
Benefits:
- Membership in BEA, including invitations and free registration to special seminars, colloquia, and the Bioengineering Science and Technology Summit; department publications; and student recruitment activities as described above
- Access to repository of faculty publications
- Summer student interns: bioengineering staff will assist in matching at least one BioE student per summer to BEP companies for research internships (student salaries paid by host)
BioEngineering Collaborators (BEC)
Organizations and individuals interested in on-campus research collaborations with bioengineering faculty who make an annual donation of $125,000 or more will be recognized as BioEngineering Collaborators.
Benefits: In addition to the beneifts of BEA and BEP membership, each Collaborator receives:
- A faculty liaison drawn from an area of special research interest to the member
- Opportunity to nominate a member to the Bioengineering Industrial Advisory Board
- An annual private research review meeting at Berkeley or the Collaborator's location (transportation provided by partner) will be organized upon request. Choice of topics will be drawn from current research in the department and the availability of appropriate faculty members.
- We will host a member of any Collaborator's organization as a Visiting Industrial Fellow (VIF) in the department for up to one year as a member of a bioengineering research team. The VIF will have access to the faculty host's laboratory facilities and experimental equipment, and may attend all department seminars and colloquia. VIFs may also attend Bioengineering courses with the consent of the instructor.
