Keasling wins first Biotech Humanitarian Award
May 20, 2009 -

Jay Keasling, Berkeley Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering and Acting Deputy Directory of Lawrence Berkeley Lab, has been awarded the first Biotech Humanitarian Award from the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).

Keasling was recognized for his use of synthetic biology techniques to develop a simple and much less expensive means of making artemisinin, today’s most powerful anti-malaria drug. The synthetic biology technology behind this breakthrough can also be used to help produce the next generation of biofuels.
